The Tagus is the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula. It flows through Spain and Portugal until it empties into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon. Once an important trade route, habitat, and source of longing, it is now primarily a resource and source of energy: The water of the Tagus cools nuclear reactors, powers hydroelectric plants, is transported through pipelines across the land to irrigate fields — and yet it (almost) doesn't flow.
Against the backdrop of the climate crisis, the water of the Tagus is increasingly becoming the subject of conflicts between Spain and Portugal, between environmental activists, residents, and beneficiaries. How much division can a river endure?
For my photographic work, I embarked on a journey along the river from a place of yearning to a place of suffering. "A river that doesn't flow" deals with loss and the powerlessness in the face of the sublimity of man-made nature, depicting a river sacrificed to industrial change.
